The House of Representatives commemorated former politician Hans Wiegel on Tuesday, June 3. Wiegel passed away on May 19, 2025, at the age of 83. He was the faction leader of the VVD from 1971 to 1977 and from 1981 to 1982.
Wiegel entered the House of Representatives in 1967 on behalf of the VVD and became faction leader four years later. In 1977, he became Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior. When he returned to the House in 1981, it was again as faction leader. After leaving the House of Representatives in 1982, he became, among other things, Commissioner of the Queen and a member of the Senate for the VVD.
Touching and Convincing People
Always neatly dressed, preferably in a blue blazer, and if possible: a cigar. An incredible sense of publicity. Wiegel was a political phenomenon like the Netherlands had never seen before, said Chairman Martin Bosma in his commemorative speech. Few people have enjoyed their political career as much as Hans Wiegel. Wiegel always radiated how wonderful he found it: the political struggle, the attention, that one dazzling remark. He said: The fiercer the debate, the more I enjoy it.
When does the House of Representatives commemorate?
In the House of Representatives, commemorations take place upon the death of heads of state from countries with which the Netherlands has close allied relations. This includes, among others, member states of the European Union, the Council of Europe, and NATO. Additionally, there is a plenary commemoration upon the death of members of the Royal Family, Ministers of State, and former Chairpersons, Prime Ministers, and faction leaders. There are also commemorations upon the death of sitting members of the House and officials working in the House of Representatives.
