How is the European Union doing? This will be debated by the House of Representatives on Thursday, June 12. Notably, members of the European Parliament will also participate in this annual debate. Representing the cabinet are Prime Minister Dick Schoof and Minister of Foreign Affairs Caspar Veldkamp. You can follow the debate from 15:20 via the livestream on this website and Debat Direct.
In March 2025, the State of the European Union 2025 was sent to the House. In this annual document, the government addresses current developments in the European Union and the Dutch perspective on them. The cabinet also indicates its views on new proposals from the European Commission.
These are the seven priorities of the European Commission:
- A new plan for sustainable prosperity and competitiveness in Europe;
- A new era for European defense and security;
- Supporting people, strengthening our societies, and improving our social model;
- Maintaining our quality of life: food security, water, and nature;
- Protecting our democracy and upholding our values;
- Europe in the world: leveraging our influence and partnerships;
- Achieving results together and preparing our Union for the future.
Members of the European Parliament
The plenary debate on the State of the European Union is the only debate where members of the European Parliament are present and allowed to speak. The MEPs have speaking time and can ask factual questions. They may not participate in the debate in the form of interruptions; that is only allowed for the members of the House of Representatives.
