Inge Defends Initiative Note on Protection of Taxpayers and Benefit Recipients

On February 15, 2024, Inge van Dijk submitted her initiative note Protection of the Rights of Taxpayers and Benefit Recipients because taxpayers and benefit recipients are currently insufficiently protected against the Tax Authorities and the Benefits Service. The benefits scandal painfully highlighted this. On a large scale, people found themselves caught in the wheels of the Tax Authorities without being able to defend themselves.

Taxpayers and benefit recipients are currently insufficiently protected against the Tax Authorities and the Benefits Service.

The practical legal protection of citizens and businesses needs to be further improved. First of all, the rights of citizens and businesses must therefore be clear, understandable, and accessible in the law. Additionally, it must be clear to citizens and businesses what they can expect from the Tax Authorities and the Benefits Service when exercising these rights.

With her initiative note, Inge van Dijk therefore makes two proposals:

  1. Instruct the Cabinet to investigate how the rights of taxpayers and benefit recipients can be fully, understandably, and centrally incorporated into the law; and
  2. Instruct the Cabinet to work with relevant parties to establish and implement a Charter of Practical Legal Protection for taxpayers and benefit recipients in execution.

Inge: For me, it was the first time in section K and I had the urge to ask the ministers a question about their answers 10 times, so it was really a matter of sitting on my hands. But I am very pleased with their positive attitude towards my proposal and hope that the Chamber feels the same way!
