Henri sees the solution in a different kind of politics, in the tradition of Arnold Kerdijk: politics driven by ideals, courtesy - that we treat each other decently - and the willingness to work together for the future of the Netherlands.
Kerdijk, a nineteenth-century politician and reformer, was known for his commitment to social justice and his vision of a government that serves society. Despite being a liberal, he worked with Christian Democrats such as Catholic leader Herman Schaepman to strengthen the core tasks of the government.
In his argument, Henri emphasizes the renewed necessity for restoring the core tasks of the government. Our safety, education, and healthcare have been under pressure in recent decades. The neglect of these core tasks by politics, in Henris view, forms a breeding ground for populism. That trust, according to Henri, also requires investments in the economy of tomorrow and strengthening community spirit.
To achieve this, a new politics is needed, based on politicians who show leadership and dare to take responsibility. A new politics can begin to regain the trust of citizens: getting the core tasks of the government in order, investing in the economy of tomorrow and the day after, and giving society room to breathe again.
Under my leadership, the CDA will formulate an answer to populism with an inspired vision and solid policy. We can do this and we must do this. The CDA takes up this challenge with full conviction.
