Starting today, members of GroenLinks and the Labour Party can vote on joint participation in the upcoming parliamentary elections and on the future of the two parties. In the referendum, which runs until June 12, two questions are posed. Due to the fall of the cabinet, the party boards have decided to put the principle decision to a vote immediately.
Announcement of Party Chairs
Katinka Eikelenboom and Esther-Mirjam Sent (party chairs of GroenLinks and PvdA) explain the referendum in an email to their members:
The Schoof cabinet has fallen. What a relief. GroenLinks and PvdA have been building a strong new political party on the left for some time. We believe in the power of solidarity, in the strength of being stronger together. Because together we can ensure affordable housing, good facilities, fair wages, and a green future in a safe Netherlands. Together we break the standstill and move forward again. Therefore, we want to bundle our strengths again during the elections and continue to build our new movement.
In recent months, we have held discussions in many places across the country about the principle decision proposed by the party boards to merge into a new party in 2026 – after the municipal elections. The plan was to present this question as a motion during the congress. However, with a cabinet fall, we had promised to put it to a vote as soon as possible.
What the Members Will Vote On
The two questions at hand are:
- Are you for or against a joint candidate list and election program of the PvdA and GroenLinks in the upcoming parliamentary elections in 2025?
- Are you for or against the PvdA and GroenLinks merging into a new political party in 2026?
Members have until June 12 at 3:00 PM to cast their votes. The results will be announced that same day.
