A disastrous amendment, last Wednesday the CDA together with the SP submitted a proposal to ensure that no profit can be made from medication that uses human tissue. It sounds complicated, but the consequences are disastrous. Companies invest this profit in treatments that give severely ill people a chance to get better. With this proposal, the CDA and SP ensure that medication for cancer patients for whom no alternative treatment is available can no longer be produced. Cancer patients are literally left out in the cold by the CDA and the SP.
People with cancer receive a treatment in which immune cells are modified to recognize and eliminate a tumor. The treatment is intense, but often provides patients with the only hope for recovery. It is that hope for recovery that is taken away from cancer patients by this proposal from the CDA and SP.
It is not only about people with cancer; treatments are also being developed for people with rheumatism and other autoimmune diseases, diabetes, several rare diseases, and some vaccines.
That this proposal from the CDA and SP is disastrous for patients is not only believed by the VVD. Organizations such as the Dutch Federation of University Medical Centers (FNU), the Association of Innovative Medicines (VIG), and the Dutch Hematology Association and its partners indicate that the consequences of this plan are far-reaching for patients. This proposal must be removed from the table as soon as possible; in the debate last Wednesday, our member Harry Bevers already warned about the consequences.
Harry Bevers: “The CDA and SP are leaving sick people out in the cold with this proposal. In the debate, I already warned the CDA about the disastrous consequences. The VVD expects that the CDA and SP will reconsider and withdraw this irresponsible proposal.”
