Keeping the Netherlands Safe: Renewal of the Code of Criminal Procedure

Our criminal law is outdated. While criminals are becoming smarter and more violent, our legal system still operates with rules from another time. This is why the Code of Criminal Procedure is being renewed. In this article, we highlight some important points that will allow us to punish criminals faster and keep the Netherlands safe.

Faster Seizure of Criminal Assets

Criminals make a lot of money from crime. They buy luxury goods with it, but more importantly, they finance new crimes. Therefore, we need to be able to seize criminal assets faster. We hit them where it really hurts: their money. With the renewed law, the threshold for this will be further lowered.

Protecting Victims

The VVD has long been committed to strengthening the position of victims and their relatives. They have already suffered enough. Previously, we ensured that they can tell their story in court. Too often, they are unable to exercise their rights. Therefore, we ensure that the rights of victims become enforceable.

Video Hearings for Flight Risk Criminals

Additionally, it will be legally established that flight risk criminals attend their trial via a video connection from prison. Transporting a serious criminal, such as Taghi, costs hundreds of hours of preparation and poses significant safety risks. With video hearings, we save valuable time, money, and reduce risks.

Continuing to Work for a Safer Netherlands

But with just this renewed law, we are not there yet. Criminals keep up with the times. Therefore, we continue to work to protect our society and keep the Netherlands safe.
