Last week, a lot happened inside and outside the House of Representatives. We have summarized a number of concrete points from our week for you.
Clarity for Self-Employed: Initiative Law for Self-Employed
At the end of last year, there was a lot of unrest among self-employed individuals in the Netherlands. Due to unclear rules, they receive fewer assignments and miss out on income. The government is leaving self-employed individuals in uncertainty for too long. This week, Member of Parliament Thierry Aartsen, together with other parties, presented a bill that provides clarity to self-employed individuals. Read more here about the initiative law.
Strengthening the Defense Industry and Supporting Ukraine
In the talk show Beau, Minister of Defense Ruben Brekelmans spoke about his visit to Ukraine. This week he announced that 500 million euros will be made available for combat drones. This way, we support Ukraine, strengthen the defense industry, and simultaneously invest in our own security.
Keeping the Netherlands Safe: Renewal of the Code of Criminal Procedure
Our criminal procedure law is outdated. While criminals are becoming smarter and more violent, our legal system still works with rules from another time. For this reason, the Code of Criminal Procedure is being renewed. Read more here about how we ensure that we can punish criminals faster and keep the Netherlands safe.
Spring Fever Week
This week was also marked by the Spring Fever Week, a week in which schools put sexual education on the agenda. Unfortunately, conservative organizations spread misinformation and try to turn parents against sexual education. We oppose this. It is essential that children learn about resilience, relationships, and sexuality.

Enabling Multiple Parenthood
Families today are sometimes different than before. The law currently recognizes only two parents, which often leads to legal and practical problems. The VVD believes it is important that laws follow current practice and solve issues for children and parents. When multiple adults care for a child, all caregivers should be able to officially recognize the child. That is why Member of Parliament Ingrid Michon announced an initiative law this week, so that children can have four parents.
