The importance of clean water in the Drentsche Aa watershed was highlighted on Friday afternoon, October 17, 2025, by the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) and the Inspectorate for the Environment and Transport (ILT). They made a field visit to National Park Drentsche Aa, with participation from the Union of Water Authorities, Rijkswaterstaat, and Environmental Service NL.
The province of Drenthe, Environmental Service Drenthe, Water Company Groningen, and Water Authority Hunze and Aa’s collectively organized the field visit. They discussed the unique character of the area and the importance of good water quality in the Drentsche Aa watershed. Specific attention was given to regional cooperation through the Implementation Program Surface Water Extraction Drentsche Aa. With a crystal-clear message: only through cooperation can we protect the vulnerable Drentsche Aa.
A visit to the House of the Drentsche Aa in Deurze, a tour of the area, and a visit to the water intake point at pumping station De Punt in Glimmen were part of the program.
Vulnerable Area, Great Importance
The Drentsche Aa area is of great value. The landscape is unique, the nature is special, and the surface water is a source for drinking water production. Surface water is extracted from the Drentsche Aa and purified into reliable tap water for hundreds of thousands of people. It is important that the quality of the water remains high.
