Under the name December in Drenthe, the city organizations of Assen, Emmen, Meppel, Coevorden, and Hoogeveen, together with the Province of Drenthe, collaborate to present a festive month full of winter activities and Christmas spirit. Extensive Offerings
On the initiative of the Province of Drenthe, the city organizations of the five cities have been working together since 2024. An online campaign highlights the extensive range of magical activities to residents and visitors in the province. The campaign was launched on Thursday, December 4, during the Recreation Congress in Emmen by Deputy Willemien Meeuwissen and Alderman Guido Rink.
Structural Support
Last year was the baptism of fire for the December in Drenthe campaign. Residents and visitors were alerted online about events in the Drenthe cities. In total, 600,000 people were reached that year, and the campaign had nearly 2 million views. Following the success of the Summer in Drenthe campaign, the Province of Drenthe decided to provide structural support. From 2026, €30,000 per year will be available for campaigns and strengthening the recreational offerings in the province and promoting the story of Drenthe. Additionally, cooperation with Marketing Drenthe is being strengthened to attract, for example, German visitors to Drenthe.
Highlights in the Cities
- Hoogeveen: Experience the enchanting City Light Festival in the center of Hoogeveen from December 12 to 14.
- Emmen: Discover Third Christmas Day, a winter experience with street theater, live performances, and a spectacular evening show with fireworks and drones.
- Meppel: Travel back in time during Dickens Christmas on December 21. Shop on Sunday among more than 100 Dickens-style characters.
- Assen: Enjoy the brand new three-day Winter Fair from December 19 to 21 through the center of Assen. From November 28 to January 4, 2026, there will be skating fun and even more winter coziness at the ice rink on Koopmansplein.
- Coevorden: Cannons roar, people shake their fists, and nobles call the soldiers on December 21 at Reuring in de Veste!
