What great results in the National Recreational Cycling Report 2025 from the National Cycling Platform. With a rating of no less than 8.6, our province once again receives the highest score in the Netherlands for cycling routes, the environment, and cycling infrastructure. We knew it all along: Drenthe is the most beautiful province to cycle in! A place where peace, space, and good facilities ensure relaxing trips and memories to cherish.
Drenthe has 279 thousand cyclists
The research shows that Drenthe has about 279 thousand recreational cyclists (16+), of which 46% cycle weekly for recreational trips. These trips average 27.7 kilometers in length. Remarkably, Drenthe is mentioned as the favorite cycling province three times as often as expected based on the population. German and Belgian visitors also find our province well, making together over 140,000 cycling day trips annually in Drenthe.
High appreciation
Drenthe scores high in the research. Cyclists rate the environment an 8.6, and safety and comfort receive a 7.8. The routes and signage in Drenthe are also good, both scoring 8.2. The cycling node network in Drenthe receives a nice rating of 8.2. Cyclists especially mention the peace, landscapes, and clear routes.
Appreciation for joint efforts
As a province, we have been investing for many years in attractive, safe, and accessible cycling routes. Deputy Willemien Meeuwissen says: “Together with many partners, we commit ourselves to everything that makes cycling in Drenthe special. Because we find it important that everyone can cycle here and enjoy the recreational offer, lively villages, and nature. I am very proud that this is seen and appreciated.”
In the coming years, we will continue working with Marketing Drenthe, the Recreation Board, the twelve Drenthe municipalities, and land managers on well-maintained cycle paths, new stories along the routes, and accessible facilities for everyone.
