The Executive Board of Drenthe grants a one-time subsidy of €99,990 to the four Drenthe food bank foundations. With this financial support, the food banks can set up and carry out local public campaigns until 2027, aimed at reducing unfamiliarity and shame around food assistance.

The subsidy is a direct implementation of the motion Support for the Drenthe Food Banks, which was adopted by the Provincial Council on July 9, 2025. The motion calls for strengthening local public campaigns, inspired by the national You are welcome initiatives.

Subsidy Distribution

The subsidy is distributed proportionally to the number of households using the food bank. Stichting voedselbank Noordenveld receives €5,782, Stichting voedselbank Zuidwest Drenthe receives €27,943, Stichting voedselbank Hart van Drenthe receives
€28,521, and Stichting voedselbank Zuidoost Drenthe receives €37,744. Each foundation determines how the campaign is locally implemented, fitting their own communication approach and cooperation with municipalities and social organizations.

Deputy Yvonne Turenhout: “Food assistance is for everyone who needs it. Yet we notice that many people experience barriers to asking for help. With this campaign, food banks can show that you are welcome, without judgment.”

Self-Reliance

Food banks help people who are temporarily struggling financially. Anyone can face this: job loss, illness, or high fixed costs can suddenly cause a shortage of money to get by. In Drenthe, this concerns over 6,500 households. To increase the self-reliance of these people, food banks work with local organizations to ensure that people can quickly stand on their own feet again. It is important that reliance on the food bank is as temporary as possible.
