The Public Prosecution Service monitors the holding of mobile devices while driving in the province of Drenthe. This is done using focus cameras. Currently, a focus camera is positioned along the N381 near Eursinge. Later this year, this camera will be moved to other locations along provincial roads, such as the N34 and N391 (Emmen ring road). The focus camera is also used on some municipal roads in Drenthe.

Answering a message, checking social media, or turning on navigation: research shows that 75% of drivers sometimes use their phone behind the wheel. To reduce distraction while driving, the Public Prosecution Service deploys special speed cameras across the country.

Focus Camera Records Only Phone Use

The focus camera stays in the same location for about two months before being moved to other locations and returning later. It monitors calling and texting behind the wheel 24 hours a day. Photos are automatically sent to the Central Judicial Collection Agency. There, an enforcement officer checks whether an offense has been committed. The fine for the vehicle owner is 440 euros plus 9 euros administration costs.

Traffic Enforcement

This method of traffic enforcement complements existing traffic controls, such as fixed speed cameras, mobile radars, and the MONOcam. Since 2023, mobile speed cameras (flex cameras) have also been deployed in the province to monitor speed limits.

Drive MONO and Arrive Safely Home

The enforcement supports the message of the MONO campaign (links to another website) by the national government, which aims to reduce the number of traffic deaths and injuries caused by social media use while driving.
