The air in the Netherlands has become a little cleaner in recent years, but it is still not clean enough. Therefore, municipalities, provinces, and the national government have been collaborating since 2020 in the Clean Air Agreement. The province of Drenthe is also involved and is actively working towards a healthier living environment.
At least 50% health gain by 2030
The goal of the Clean Air Agreement is to permanently improve air quality, achieving a health gain of 50 percent by 2030 compared to 2016. This means fewer children developing asthma due to air pollution, a lower chance of heart and vascular diseases, and improved quality of life for everyone.
September 7: International Day of Clean Air
On Sunday, September 7, 2025, the importance of clean air will be recognized worldwide. During the International Day of Clean Air, participants in the Clean Air Agreement will draw attention to this theme. We invite residents to contribute to better air quality as well.
What are we doing in Drenthe? Various projects in Drenthe contribute to cleaner air. For example, students in Emmen have measured air quality. Through Op Fietse and Drenthe travels Sustainable, we promote cycling and sustainable travel. The construction of the cycling route De Groene As at Hooidijk is being carried out with zero emissions. Machines powered by electricity are being used. More information can be found at www.provincie.drenthe.nl/airquality.
What you can do
Everyone can contribute to cleaner air. For example, you can ride your bike more often or choose public transport. On www.schoneluchtakkoord.nl/tips (links to another website), you will find more practical ideas.
