On Sunday afternoon, 23 November, several visitors reported seeing a wolf in the Dwingelderveld. According to these reports, the animal showed interest in some dogs present and came very close. There was no physical contact.

We understand that this can be a frightening moment for visitors. The wolf was chased away by loud shouting. This is important because (curious) wolves need to learn not to come too close to people and dogs. The province is investigating possible follow-up steps to discourage this unwanted behavior.

Wolves in Drenthe

Wolves have been living in Drenthe for several years, so they are sometimes observed. There is a brochure on our website (links to another website) available with explanations on what to do if you encounter a wolf. It is important to stay on the paths, keep dogs on a short leash, and maintain distance.

For more information, visit our website about the wolf or the national wolf information point (links to another website)
