Under that motto, the Province of Drenthe said a grand farewell to Jetta Klijnsma after 8 years. During a theatrical performance in a full Provincial Council chamber, her contributions to Drenthe were highlighted in words, images, and music.

Minister Frank Rijkaart of the Ministry of the Interior appointed Klijnsma as Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau on behalf of His Majesty the King. ‘A recognition for everything you have done: for Drenthe, for the Netherlands, and for the people you have helped.’

Isa Zwart, the Johan Willem Friso Chapel, and The Dutch Dont Dance Division provided the artistic and musical accompaniment. Writer Tommy Wieringa announced he would write ‘the great Drenthe novel’ and dedicate it to Klijnsma.

Deputy Commissioner Gert-Jan Schuinder and Jan Brouwer, vice-chairman of the Provincial Council, spoke about her significance for Drenthe’s governance. ‘Drenthe gained more color in its cheeks.’

The Groningen Commissioner René Paas praised her contributions to northern cooperation and lobbying. The mayor of Assen, Marco Out, announced he would rename a bike path to Commissaris Klijnsmapad.

In a video message, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte spoke words of praise. He admired her gift for bringing people together and her dedication.

The closing words were naturally from the departing commissioner: “Dear all, that neighborliness: cherish it greatly. Make sure everyone can always rely on you. Back and forth. Because it is much harder to ask for help than to give it. Neighborliness is the most beautiful thing Drenthe knows. I have enjoyed it, thank you all!”

Thank you, Jetta!
