Travelers on the N391 between Emmen and Ter Apel can make use of a new viaduct at Pottendijk. This viaduct provides more safety and smoother traffic flow. The name Pottendijk was unveiled by deputy Henk Jumelet and alderman Jan Bos of the municipality of Emmen. This section of the road now has a maximum speed limit of 100 kilometers per hour.

The road between Emmen and Ter Apel was widened in 2014. This has improved accessibility in Southeast Drenthe. New connections have been established at Emmerschans and at Pottendijk. The junction N391 N366 at Ter Apel was also constructed together with Groningen. This allows traffic to flow better and makes the route safer.

Less Emission, More Reuse

Deputy Henk Jumelet: “We also want to work more sustainably in road construction. Therefore, in this project, equipment that does not emit CO2 was used. Additionally, we reused as much sand and asphalt as possible. This has saved 78 percent of new raw materials.”

Accessibility and Business Activity

Alderman Jan Bos: “Emmen has a lot of business activity and the largest industrial cluster in Northern Netherlands. Good accessibility is essential for all that traffic. The viaduct at Pottendijk is another link that improves the flow of traffic. This makes the businesses along the N391, as well as the noise sports center itself, more accessible.”

MM Accessible

This project is part of MM Accessible. The Province of Drenthe and the municipality of Emmen are working together on safe roads and better traffic flow on the Ring Road (N391) and the Emmen Klazienaveen road (N862).
