From January 1, 2026, residents of Drenthe can apply for specific subsidies for circular village and neighborhood initiatives within the existing Resident Initiatives Drenthe subsidy scheme. For this additional opportunity, €500,000 is available, evenly divided over 2026 and 2027. This extra boost is on top of the existing annual budget of €800,000 for resident initiatives that support social projects. With this expansion, the province encourages projects that contribute to less waste, reuse of materials, and a more sustainable living environment.
This expansion makes it possible to support circular projects such as repair cafés and exchange or sharing concepts, local compost projects, communal tool sheds, and activities that raise awareness about circular practices. This boost stems from the motion Impulse for Circular Village Initiatives and Village Halls in Drenthe adopted by the Provincial States on July 9, 2025.
Collaboration with Villages and Organizations
Until now, the subsidy scheme focused on social and community initiatives that strengthen livability and mutual connection in neighborhoods, districts, and villages. For these projects, €800,000 is available annually. The additional €500,000 for circular projects is distributed over 2026 and 2027 (€250,000 per year). With this expansion, the province aligns with the existing subsidy scheme for resident initiatives, making the application process recognizable and straightforward for residents. After completion, the scheme will be evaluated for impact and reach.
Deputy Yvonne Turenhout: “Many wonderful initiatives in our villages arise from involved residents who want to improve their living environment together. With this extra boost for circular projects, we give them more room to take steps towards a sustainable future.”
