Volunteers strengthen Drenthe, and the Sweelpop Foundation from Zweeloo has been demonstrating this for over 40 years. They are this years recipient of The Compliment of Drenthe 2025. This annual recognition from the Province of Drenthe honors volunteers who make a significant difference with their dedication. Sweelpop receives a cheque of €3,000 to continue their work. The announcement took place during a festive event at the provincial house, where Deputy Yvonne Turenhout presented The Compliment of Drenthe.

A festival supported by volunteers

Sweelpop has been a well-known event in Southeast Drenthe for decades. The music festival runs entirely on voluntary efforts. Eighty volunteers and a young, energetic board of 10 members organize a professional and atmospheric event each year that brings together different generations. “The best part is that we do this together,” says volunteer Stein Jansen. “Everyone is fully committed here because we believe in the festival and in each other. That makes Sweelpop so special.”

The jury especially praises the enthusiasm and perseverance of the many young volunteers: “Sweelpop shows how powerful volunteer work can be. With a close-knit group, they keep a tradition alive and repeatedly organize a festival that connects the region.”

Encouragement awards

Besides Sweelpop, four other organizations were nominated. Each received an encouragement award of €1,000 for their valuable contribution to Drenthe society:

  • Play4Peace
  • Youth Committee Music Association A.M.D.G.
  • Sportplein Emmerhout
  • New Years Eve Association De Oliebol

The Heart of Drenthe

Marit Luna, founder of Dansen bij Marit, received the special recognition The Heart of Drenthe, intended for individuals who make a big difference. Marit makes dance accessible to all children in Wilhelminaoord and surrounding areas, regardless of their financial situation. Her dedication and positive impact make her an inspiring example for others. Marit also received a cheque of €250 alongside The Heart of Drenthe.

Stronger together for volunteers

All organizations that registered this year for The Compliment of Drenthe are offered a free course ‘Successful volunteer recruitment’. The province aims to contribute to strong, future-proof volunteer initiatives. Additionally, the collaboration of Vrijwilligers Drenthe, Biblionet Drenthe, BOKD, CMO STAMM, Art & Culture, IVN, SportDrenthe and Zorgbelang Drenthe offers additional support to volunteer organizations in the province.
