In Drenthe, two new wolf packs have been established. These are the so-called Middenveld pack in the municipality of Midden-Drenthe and the Zuid-Drenthe pack in the municipality of Westerveld. In recent years, there were already two wolf packs established in Drenthe, namely in the Drents-Friese region and in Midden-Drenthe. With the arrival of the Zuid-Drenthe and Middenveld packs, Drenthe now has four wolf packs.
The latest progress report from BIJ12 shows that the Middenveld pack has five pups and three pups have been seen with the parent pair of the Zuid-Drenthe pack. The province of Drenthe aims to inform residents, visitors, and recreationists as well as possible on how to deal with the presence of wolves in a safe and responsible manner.
Rules of Conduct in Wolf Areas
In areas where wolves live, rules of conduct apply:
- Stay on paths and keep your distance when encountering wolves
- Do not feed wolves and do not leave food scraps in nature
- Always keep dogs on a leash
Leave Young Wolves Alone
The province urges not to approach young wolves, or pups, and to leave them alone. Young wolves should not learn to trust humans. This is crucial for their safety and that of people and animals in the vicinity. If you see a wolf or a pup, keep your distance and report the sighting via the Wolf Reporting Point (refers to another website).
Support for Farmers
For livestock holders, the province offers a subsidy scheme for taking wolf deterrent measures. Information about this can be found on the website of the Province of Drenthe.
