The Province of Drenthe is taking the next step in improving accessibility in the border region. Together with Bentheimer Eisenbahn and Deelfiets Nederland, the province is working on placing shared bicycles at the stations along the new railway connection between Emmen and Bad Bentheim. Subsidy has been successfully applied for through Interreg Germany-Netherlands. As a result, about 55 bicycles will be available on the Dutch side, half of which are electric.
Deputy Bart van Dekken: “The combination of the new train connection and shared bicycles is a great step forward for accessibility in the border region. Travelers will soon find it easier to get to work, education, or leisure destinations and continue directly by bike from the station.”
Shared Bicycles Available from December 2026
It is expected that the shared bicycles will be available from December 2026, coinciding with the opening of the new railway connection. An important step for the accessibility of the border region and cooperation between the Netherlands and Germany.
More Information
At larger stations in the Netherlands, shared bicycles from OV-fiets are already available. With this project, travelers in smaller towns will also gain access to shared bicycles. This makes it possible to continue your journey from the station to your final destination. Read more about shared bicycles in the Netherlands (links to another website).
