The Province of Drenthe has started a follow-up to the practical trial with movable wolf-repellent wire fences. The fences help sheep farmers protect their animals from wolves.

Experiences from Previous Trial

The first trial ran from October 1, 2024 to May 31, 2025. Eleven sheep farmers participated. During this period, 114 fences were installed. The animal owners were positive about the use of the mobile fences. The trial provided a lot of useful information about installation, power supply, and the removal and maintenance of the fences. During the evaluation, it was determined that there is still more to learn in practice.

Follow-up and Goal

Because the trial went well, it is now being continued for at least one year. The practical trial can be extended twice more by one year each, for a total of 3 years. This allows animal owners and implementers to gain more experience with wolf-repellent wire fences in different seasons.
Two types of roll-up systems are being tested: the system that the province developed together with the contractor from the first practical trial and a commercial system that is freely available on the market. This clarifies the advantages and disadvantages of the two systems.

Duration and Participation

The new trial started on October 1, 2025, and runs until September 30, 2026. Afterwards, it will be reviewed with the participants whether the trial will be extended. The trial is intended for professional and semi-professional sheep farmers who need to move their animals regularly. There are 20 to 25 participants.
