Work is underway at Havelterberg to restore nature. Before this can happen, the soil has been carefully examined for possible explosives from World War II. It is known that the Fliegerhorst Havelte airfield was located here during the war, which was bombed several times by the Allies. During this investigation, three so-called 500-pound bombs and one 100-pound bomb were found. These have been mapped and secured.

The investigation shows that one explosive lies deeper in the soil than expected. To determine how they can be safely cleared, additional research will soon take place at a deeper soil layer. Based on these results, an action plan will be drawn up for the timing and method of clearance.

No danger to the surroundings

The situation at Havelterberg has not changed compared to before the investigation. The found objects have been safely covered again, so there is no danger to the surroundings. The paths are accessible to the public again.

As soon as more clarity is available about the follow-up investigation and the clearance schedule, we will share that information via the website: Southwest Drenthe (refers to another website)
