Starting Wednesday, October 1, the contractor Leemans will investigate suspicious objects in the project area Havelterberg. Where necessary, these objects will be removed. This is needed to start nature restoration in this area, near the sheepfold. The work will take some time. How long exactly depends on the weather and what is encountered along the way. This means that some walking and cycling paths will be temporarily closed on weekdays.
Due to the areas war history, suspicious objects are often found. This was confirmed during the preliminary detection survey in this area. Leemans investigation must now clarify whether these are war remnants that need to be cleared. If necessary, local residents will receive a letter from the municipality about this.
Closed Paths
Around the areas where work is being done, walking and cycling paths within a radius of 50 meters will not be accessible on weekdays. The paths are open on weekends. The routes will be closed from September 29. An overview of the closures and diversions can be found at https://zuidwest.drenthe.nl.
Nature Restoration Holtingerveld
The Havelterberg is located in the Holtingerveld, a European protected Natura 2000 area. The work on the Havelterberg is part of a broader plan for nature in the Holtingerveld. The goal is to restore and expand heathy grassland, a rare and vulnerable type of nature that naturally belongs in this area. The establishment of heathy grassland is an important step within the European and national obligations to preserve vulnerable nature. Through these measures, plant and animal species can spread better, and nature becomes stronger and more resilient to climate change.
Who Does What in Nature Restoration?
Province of Drenthe, together with partners, is working throughout Drenthe on robust nature within the Program for Natural Countryside (PNP). Prolander is carrying out this nature restoration on its behalf and is the point of contact during Leemans work. During this work, a Prolander employee will be present in the area weekly. You can see when Prolander is present in the area at https://zuidwest.drenthe.nl.
