During the Cornelis Lely Lecture 2025, Flevoland was presented as a laboratory for progressive area development. The annual lecture organized by the Flevo Society had the theme “40 years of the province of Flevoland in the land of Lely, on to the next 40!”

Creating Communities Together

Former Chief Government Architect Floris Alkemade called for a new approach to housing: not just building houses, but creating communities. With thousands of new homes on the horizon, Flevoland offers space for innovative housing concepts where care, aging, and social connection are central.

Max Droste emphasized on behalf of the National Real Estate Agency the importance of cooperation between the national government, province, and municipalities. The construction of tens of thousands of new homes requires stable ground, good accessibility, facilities, and future-proof materials. Only by working together can we realize this significant task.

Unique Character

Commissioner of the King Arjen Gerritsen reflected on the unique character of Flevoland: a province that is not only designed but also offers space for spontaneous growth. He called for five administrative choices: from projects to programs, living as a community, water and soil as a starting point, multiple land use, and administrative continuity. His message: “Build a future where a society already exists.”

Flevoland is once again at the beginning of a special phase. A phase where vision, decisiveness, and collaboration are the keys to a livable and sustainable future.
