We are the host province of the national opening of the VriendenLoterij Open Monument Day on Friday, September 11. This marks the start of a weekend during which thousands of monuments across the Netherlands are open to the public. In 2026, both we and Open Monument Day celebrate our 40th anniversary. Flevoland is therefore a fitting location for the national opening.
The opening is part of the many activities we organize to celebrate our anniversary. It is unique that the opening of the VriendenLoterij Open Monument Day this year takes place at the provincial level. Normally, the opening is held in a single city.
Arjen Gerritsen, Commissioner of the King: “That we as a province may host the opening of Open Monument Day shows that Flevoland, as the newest and fastest-growing province of the Netherlands, has a rich (heritage) past that is not forgotten despite our growth. I invite everyone to come and see on Friday, September 11, discover our monuments, and experience the stories of Flevoland together.”
About the VriendenLoterij Open Monument Day
The VriendenLoterij Open Monument Day takes place every year on the second weekend of September. The event is organized with the help of hundreds of local committees and thousands of volunteers. During Monument Day, thousands of monuments in the Netherlands are open to the public.
Bert Boer, director of Nederland Monumentenland (organizer of Open Monument Day): “Monumental Heritage forms an anchor in our society. It tells something about who we are, where we come from, and where we are going. It is important to supplement the monuments in the Netherlands with contemporary heritage. That is why we find it nice to pay attention to the monuments of tomorrow together in the context of 40 years Province of Flevoland.”
