Together with Waterschap Zuiderzeeland, the Rijksvastgoedbedrijf, and the municipalities of Almere, Lelystad, Zeewolde, Dronten, and Urk, we signed the Future-Proof Construction covenant on November 3. This collaboration marks an important step towards a sustainable, circular, and climate-resilient construction practice in Flevoland.
Building Together for a Livable Future
Flevoland will continue to grow in the coming years: new homes will be added and existing areas renewed. This growth offers opportunities but also requires careful choices. With the Future-Proof Construction covenant, we agree to collaborate on a construction task that is not only quantitatively but especially qualitatively future-proof. This means building with attention to energy consumption, material use, water management, biodiversity, and climate change.
By sharing knowledge, learning together, and encouraging innovative construction methods, we aim to ensure that every new home and building makes a positive contribution to the living environment.
Deputy Ellentrees Müller: “What we build today determines how we live tomorrow. With this covenant, we join forces to build smarter, greener, and future-proof in Flevoland. We want not only enough homes but also healthy, sustainable living environments that last for generations.”
According to the deputy, Flevoland’s strength lies in governments and partners accelerating together: “By coordinating, sharing knowledge, and strengthening each other, we ensure that sustainable construction is not the exception but the norm.”
From Ambitions to Action
The covenant forms a joint framework for cooperation, knowledge sharing, and implementation. Central topics include:
- Circular building: reusing materials and building with low environmental impact
 - Climate adaptation: considering water, heat, and drought in design and layout
 - Energy-efficient and nature-inclusive building: homes that consume less energy and contribute to biodiversity

We will jointly set up pilots and demonstration projects applying the principles of future-proof construction. This way, knowledge and experiences can be quickly shared and scaled up.
Flevoland as a Testbed for Sustainable Construction
Flevoland aims to profile itself as a testbed for innovative construction concepts. As a province, we have space, young cities, and a progressive construction sector: ideal conditions to experiment with new, sustainable solutions.
The Future-Proof Construction covenant will be further developed in a joint implementation agenda in the coming period, including concrete projects and measurable goals. More information about sustainable and future-proof construction in Flevoland can be found on the Living webpage.
