In the autumn of 2025, work will begin in the gateway area of the Oostvaardersplassen in Almere. This area is one of the access points to National Park Nieuw Land. Over the next two years, the area will receive a quality boost with new facilities that bring nature and experience closer together. Deputy Harold Hofstra, Alderman Maaike Veeningen of the municipality of Almere, and director Riena Tienkamp of Staatsbosbeheer gave the starting signal on October 17, 2025.
Gateway Areas as Access to Nature
National Park Nieuw Land consists of unique nature areas such as the Oostvaardersplassen, Lepelaarplassen, Markermeer, and Marker Wadden. To make this nature accessible to everyone, the gateway areas are being developed into places where visitors can discover, experience, and appreciate nature. The province of Flevoland plays an active role in this, together with partners such as Staatsbosbeheer and Stad & Natuur.
What Will Be in the Oostvaardersbos?
In the Oostvaardersbos, on the edge of the Oostvaardersplassen, new elements will be added to enhance the nature experience:
- A special bridge with a viewing platform as part of a renewed walking route
- A nature boulevard with resting spots and views of the lakes
- A lookout hill at the Hugo de Vriespad, an education forest with forest ponds for nature education
- A wandering path through a water-rich zone, accessible via a floating bridge
These facilities will allow for close-up experiences of nature, with respect for the vulnerable flora and fauna.
Deputy Harold Hofstra: This is a good example of how nature development can go hand in hand with recreation and tourism. With the new facilities, visitors can better experience the beauty of this area while simultaneously protecting and enhancing biodiversity. This project shows that we in Flevoland can be proud of our innovative approach to nature management and recreation.
Building Together for an Experienceable National Park
The province of Flevoland works with partners on nature experience in National Park Nieuw Land. By investing in gateway areas, we make nature accessible and experienceable without disturbing the tranquility in the core area. The project in the Oostvaardersbos is part of the Almeersepoort program and is made possible by the Almere Urbanization Fund.
