On Friday, November 28, young people from Flevoland challenge their politicians during the Provincial Youth Debate Flevoland. In the provincial house, the youths debate with various members of the Provincial Council. Twelve of the participating youths will be selected for the 31st National Youth Debate in The Hague. Together with the National Youth Council (NJR), we organize the Provincial Youth Debate every year.

Youth Make Their Voices Heard

Provincial politics makes many decisions affecting young people. Therefore, it is important that youths make their voices heard. The Youth Debate brings together young people from various backgrounds. The group of participants consists of youths aged 12-18 from across the province, from vmbo, havo, vwo, and mbo schools. During the Youth Debate, youths debate with various Provincial Council members about topics that matter to them. Deputy Toon van Dijk welcomes the youths.

In the morning, the youths are divided into different (non-politically affiliated) factions. Each group works on their own theme. Using a fixed improvement methodology, youths create a vision, identify obstacles and causes of those obstacles, and devise solutions around the themes. They receive substantive support from civil servants.

Debating with Provincial Council Members

In the afternoon, the youths debate with Provincial Council members from various political parties. Here, the youths present their proposals to politicians. During the debate, they try to convince politicians of their proposals in the hope that the plan, or parts of it, will actually be implemented. The Council members ask clarifying questions and work together with the youths to find ways to implement their plans.

Students from schools across the province participate. Everyone, including family and friends, is warmly welcome to attend the debate. The program starts at 1:30 PM in the Provincial Council Chamber of the provincial house.

National Youth Debate

Not only youths from Flevoland make their voices heard. NJR also organizes debates in all other Dutch provinces. By participating in the Youth Debate in their province, youths have a chance to take part in the 31st National Youth Debate in The Hague. This debate will take place in February 2026 in the House of Representatives. During the National Youth Debate, 12 youths per province, about 150 youths in total, debate with ministers and state secretaries.
