On Thursday, November 6, seven organizations jointly took the next step for the Oostvaardersoevers project. Together with the municipalities of Almere and Lelystad, Staatsbosbeheer, Rijkswaterstaat, Waterschap Zuiderzeeland, and the Flevo-landschap Foundation, we signed a cooperation agreement. This marks the end of the preparation phase. In January 2026, an engineering firm will start the design. Based on this, permits can be applied for, and then preparations for realization will begin.
Deputy Harold Hofstra: “With this agreement, we take an important step to connect nature, water, and recreation in a sustainable way. We take the next step in this large and unique project. Together, we make Oostvaardersoevers a place where people and nature flourish.”
What is Oostvaardersoevers?
The Markermeer, the Oostvaardersplassen, and the Lepelaarplassen are three special Natura 2000 areas in the heart of the Netherlands. These areas have much to offer each other and will find and strengthen each other thanks to Oostvaardersoevers. Water and fish connections ensure that fish and nutrients can better spread between the areas. Nature is not only strengthened but also made accessible. This way, plants, animals, and people can benefit. The project connects the Markermeer with the Oostvaardersplassen and Lepelaarplassen. This creates a strong and lively natural area that also strengthens National Park Nieuw Land.
