The Province of Flevoland today publishes the independent scientific review of the Oostvaardersplassen policy framework. This policy framework was established in 2018. For the first time since the policy framework was established, a scientific assessment and verification have been conducted to determine whether the provincial policy has been properly implemented, with initial conclusions and recommendations connected to this. The aim of the review is to assess whether the policy framework has been properly executed and whether it has resulted in the desired effect. The outcomes of the scientific review currently do not provide grounds for adjustments or proposals to amend the policy framework.
Six Years
The review confirms that almost all components of the policy framework have been executed or are in the final phase of implementation. At the same time, the researchers emphasize that many ecological effects are not yet measurable because reorganization and management measures have recently been completed or are still in development. This calls for realistic expectations and continuation of monitoring and adaptive management. In six to twelve years, statements could be made about trends within species and species groups. Therefore, it has been decided to conduct a follow-up review in six years.
Follow-up
The outcomes and the follow-up process will be discussed on January 7 and 14, 2026, in the States Committee on Space, Nature, and Sustainability. The full review and related documents are available from today on our website. The review was conducted by Wageningen University and Research (WUR).
Further Steps
“We are pleased with the scientific review that has been conducted. We thank all involved for their commitment and involvement in the implementation of the policy framework. With this review and the follow-up of the recommendations, we are taking further steps together towards a robust, resilient, and attractive Oostvaardersplassen area for nature, people, and animals,” said the Provincial Executive of Flevoland.
