Province of Gelderland promotes sports and movement in public spaces. We are constructing 3x3 basketball courts in Gelderland villages and cities. A total of 8 subsidies have been granted. These courts contribute to a healthy lifestyle and social connection, especially in neighborhoods with a low socioeconomic status.

4 courts already opened, 4 under construction

The courts in Nijmegen, Apeldoorn, Harderwijk, and Barneveld have already been established. The courts in the municipalities of Didam, Zutphen, Arnhem, and Bemmel will be built in the coming time. Each court is combined with a program that encourages local youth to develop leadership and social skills through sports.

Festive opening in Barneveld

On Saturday, September 27, 2025, the municipality of Barneveld celebrated the opening of a new 3x3 basketball court. In the Oldenbarnevelt neighborhood, a multi-sport field (a sports field for various sports) and several playgrounds were also opened. During the opening, sports tournaments and demonstrations took place, including by the basketball association Tower Jumpers and youth guided by Foundation Connect.

Sports and movement not only promote a healthy lifestyle but also bring people together

On this 3x3 basketball court, new friendships are formed. The win of the gold medal at the 2024 Olympic Games has shown how fun this sport is. The court is an accessible way for young and old to exercise and meet each other.

Olympic gold as an inspiration

The construction of these courts is a beautiful continuation of the successes of the Dutch 3x3 basketball team. Worthy de Jong, Dimeo van der Horst, Jan Driessen, and Arvin Slagter won a gold medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The 3x3 courts in Gelderland provide youth with the opportunity to discover their talents and further develop their social skills, inspired by the golden achievement in Paris.

Working together for a healthy living environment

Sports facilities in public spaces challenge our residents to move more together. This aligns with the goal of the Gelderland program Sport to make sports and movement possible for everyone.
