The Provincial Executive established the annual budget circular (guidelines for the upcoming budget) for municipalities for 2026. It contains current themes and developments that are important for municipalities in preparing their budgets and associated multi-year projections.
Proactive Supervision of Budgets
Almost half of municipalities are at risk of not being able to balance their budgets for the coming years. Therefore, Gelderland is monitoring how municipalities prepare for the challenging year of 2026 at an unusually early stage as a provincial supervisor.
Provincial Executive Helga Witjes previously indicated that she stands ‘shoulder to shoulder’ with the Gelderland municipalities and consciously chooses proactive supervision of municipalities budgets. She gave an interview about this to Binnenlands Bestuur.
