The commissioner specifically highlighted the strength of the Gelderland community he experienced, among other things through the many meetings with people and organizations committed to others. The commissioner also spoke out against threats and intimidation directed at public officials. He stated that it is important to continue listening to each other under difficult circumstances:
Truly listening is two-way traffic and requires something from everyone participating in that traffic, in this case both government and citizen. Only then do we move forward together. Democracy is not a given; it cannot defend itself. We, as inhabitants of this country and this province, really have to do that together.
A province with courage
In his speech, the commissioner also looked back on 2025. He mentions the courage of the province and government not to shy away from difficult decisions. Themes such as nitrogen and the wolf affect many Gelderlanders.
