Residents with a low socioeconomic position (SEP) move less on average than people with a higher SEP. Only 34% of this group meets the movement guidelines, compared to 50% of the higher SEP group. Weekly sports participation also lags behind. This is evident from figures from the Knowledge Center for Sport & Movement.
Digital reward coin
The Fitcoin is a digital reward coin with which participants earn points via an app by moving or participating in healthy activities. These Fitcoins can be exchanged for practical, local products and services. Since 2021, several Gelderland municipalities have been using the Fitcoin.
Research effects Fitcoin program
We commissioned research on the effect of this program. This research was conducted by HAN Sport and Movement among residents with a low socioeconomic position. The study looked at who is reached, whether participants move more, and what broader effects occur. Think of experienced health, social contact, and sports participation. The Fitcoin is used in Gelderland by Vincentius in Nijmegen, “Green, healthy and moving Nijmegen” and in the municipality of Wijchen. In the Liemers, this project has stopped.
Healthier lifestyle and enjoyment in moving
More than half of the people who participated in the study indicate that thanks to this program they move or exercise more. They also mention better fitness, a healthier lifestyle, and above all: more enjoyment in moving. The app also helps to become more aware of daily activity. Many participants join because they want to live healthier, feel better, and move more. The reward helps, but is usually not the main reason to participate.
Fitcoin raises awareness
The research shows that the Fitcoin makes participants aware of how much they move and provides motivation and enjoyment in moving. The Fitcoin can help people take the first step towards moving and a healthier lifestyle. I hope it will bring a lot to our residents.

Fitcoin approach has potential
However, measurable changes in movement behavior are limited. Small positive shifts are visible. The results provide valuable input for follow-up projects. Participant satisfaction and positive experiences with motivation, structure and awareness show that the Fitcoin approach has potential. More data is needed for future projects to make more targeted statements.
