Everyone using the road must adhere to the maximum speed. However, there are still many instances of speeding, resulting in a greater chance of accidents and their severe consequences.

We are working in various ways to improve road safety. Among other things, by focusing on innovative behavioral measures that promote safe speeds.

Testbed for Promoting Safe Speeds

In addition to what is already being done, there is still room for additional measures to positively promote safe speeds. Therefore, we want to create a testbed for developing innovative measures that contribute to promoting safe driving behavior. We will empirically test these measures in various locations in Gelderland. When it has been shown in the testbed that a new measure is successful, we hope that it will also be implemented in other places in the Netherlands.

Tender

For this testbed, we are looking for a party (or partnership) that wants to develop innovative measures and implement them through pilot projects. For this purpose, we published a tender that market parties can respond to. Interested parties can submit their ideas and a plan of action by October 17, 2025. The plan is to develop the innovations through a number of tests in 2026 and 2027.

Safe Road Design and Safe Behavior

We manage over 1,100 km of road and spend a lot of time, work, and money on good and safe road design. However, many accidents still occur on the road each year, some even resulting in fatalities. An adjustment to the road design can help make a road safer. But the behavior of road users is also crucial for safety on our roads. Therefore, we focus on both road design and behavior to improve road safety.

Too Often We See Issues on Our Roads Due to Speeding

Enforcement helps here: no one is waiting for a traffic fine in the mailbox. But in addition, you can also positively influence the behavior of road users. I think it is very nice that we as a province can promote positive driving behavior as a complement to what already exists.
