Now that the dark months of the year have arrived, it is extra important that cyclists are clearly visible in traffic. Using lights prevents accidents and saves lives. Especially young people sometimes forget to turn on their bike lights.

Bike Light Repair Event in Apeldoorn

At dusk on October 28, 2025, around the station square in Apeldoorn, cyclists were in for a surprise. Cyclists without bike lights did not receive a fine this time but a free bike light repair! Could the bike light not be fixed immediately? Then they received separate bike lights. This way, all cyclists could get home safely. This event was the kickoff of the bike lighting campaign Check. Fix. On.

Check. Fix. On.

With a simple checklist, young people are encouraged to use permanent bike lighting and behave safely in traffic. There are also bike repairs and bike light vending machines in various locations in the province, such as the bike parking in the center of Apeldoorn, the sports hall in Doetinchem, and the bike parking at the campus of Wageningen University. Handy if you discover at departure that you dont have good lighting! This ensures everyone gets home safely. View our webpage for more information about the Check. Fix. On. campaign.

Youth and Bike Lighting

The campaign mainly targets young people between 12 and 24 years old. This is because young people often forget to check whether their lighting works and do not repair broken lighting in time.

Winter Time Has Started Again

If you come home from school or work these days, you may suddenly be caught off guard by the early darkness. Now is the time to make sure your bike lighting is in order. Good bike lighting reduces the chance of accidents by 17%. A small effort that can save lives and ensures everyone gets home safely.

Everyone Safe at Home

We work daily on traffic safety and flow on Gelderlands roads and bike paths. This is done by performing daily maintenance, improving infrastructure, and stimulating safe behavior of road users. Because everyone on the road is part of the traffic. With campaigns, education, research, and activities at schools and events, we encourage people to move safely in traffic, pay attention to other road users, and adhere to rules and agreements. The goal? Everyone safe at home.
