The successful project Green in the Neighborhood has been completed. The project shows that greening is not only good for biodiversity and climate resilience, but also for social connection and livability.

In collaboration with IVN Nature Education, Climate Alliance Netherlands, and Working Together with Results, we transformed hardened neighborhoods in Gelderland into green, climate-resilient, and social living environments. These 3 tracks were central to the project:

  • More green spaces – In 3 municipalities, pilots were conducted to green the neighborhood together with residents.
  • 1 methodology for all municipalities – The guidelines translate the lessons from the pilots into an approach that is widely applicable.
  • Knowledge sharing – Municipalities and organizations receive support to get started themselves.

Practical Guidelines

The guidelines provide concrete steps, inspiring examples, tips for participation, and for collaboration between the physical and social domains.

In our new guidelines From Plan to Plant, you will discover:

  • How to connect the physical and social domains within your municipality (because green really grows when people participate).
  • How to open doors to residents that you would otherwise never reach with corporations and welfare work.
  • How to activate residents to design, plant, and care for the new greenery together.

Green in the neighborhood is more than a planting day: it is a movement towards healthy, connected, and future-proof neighborhoods.

Free Workshop

To further assist municipalities, IVN Gelderland organizes a free workshop for municipal teams. In 1 half-day, participants work on a case from their own municipality, explore creative solutions, and develop a visual action plan. The workshop is intended for employees from both the physical and social domains. It is funded by the province of Gelderland.

Positive Effect on the Living Environment

It is clear that the climate is changing. Therefore, we must take measures to reduce the effects of heat, drought, and waterlogging. With more greenery in the neighborhood, we ensure less heat and more water retention. And the beautiful thing is that more greenery also has a positive effect on the living environment.
