2,269 people completed the questionnaire. We use the results to better consider residents wishes in our policies.

Key Results

More and more residents understand the importance of water. Many feel well protected against floods. However, some are concerned and preparations could be better.

Flood Safety

Most residents (78%) feel safe during a flood. This is mainly because they trust the dikes and other protective measures. Yet only 1 in 3 people (33%) have checked if their home is at risk of flooding, for example on the website: overstroomik.nl. In some areas, such as Rivierenland and the Rijk van Maas en Waal, people are more worried. Residents there also take more measures, like preparing sandbags or making agreements about what to do in emergencies.

Measures Against Water Nuisance

Many people already try to prevent water nuisance around their homes. For example, 82% have a lot of greenery in their garden and few tiles. 74% collects rainwater. However, adaptations to the home itself, such as a waterproof basement, are less common. People also do not always actively seek information. But if subsidies are available (for example for a rain barrel or green roof), 88% might consider using them.

Drought and Water Shortage

Almost everyone (92%) notices the effects of drought. Think of watering bans, dry grass, or low water levels. Many people take action themselves, such as showering shorter, washing less often, or using rainwater. Many also believe the government should do something, for example by requiring companies to use less water and providing tips to save water.

Clean and Safe Water

Residents want clear information about what is allowed in the sewer. They also want to better understand what can be properly purified. Water campaigns are not yet well known. The province can do more, for example through websites, newspapers, and cooperation with municipalities.
