In the House of the Province, a bust of Jan Terlouw can still be admired, as a tribute to a very experienced and accessible administrator who worked his whole life for the public good.
His name will always be associated with the 2 flood crises that Gelderland experienced in 1993 and 1995. In that last year, the situation became so alarming, especially in the River Area, that he decided to evacuate. Approximately 250,000 people and 1 million animals were then forcibly evacuated.
He was a lover of culture and regularly advocated for more knowledge of other religions. For that reason, he was a strong advocate for the former Biblical Open-Air Museum, now known as Oriëntalis. When the Province of Gelderland decided long after his term not to provide funding to the museum, he clearly expressed his regret over that decision.
