Worldwide, 1 in 3 women experience physical, psychological and/or sexual violence. Also in Gelderland, women and girls still too often face violence. Examples include:
- (sexual) harassment
- domestic violence
- forced prostitution
- femicide (the intentional killing of a woman or girl)
Violence against women and girls occurs in many places. From school and sports clubs to public transport and on the street. But also via the internet and behind closed doors.
Strong women
We participate in the campaign to let these women and girls know that we stand by their side. And that we do not accept violence against women and stand up for them. This way, they experience that there is space to talk about what happened to them without fear of judgment, but with hope and help. We bring this to the attention of as many Gelderlanders as possible by, among other things, lighting up our House of the Province orange. And through our website and social media.
Every woman and girl must feel safe
Every woman and every girl must feel safe, at home, on the street, at school and online. With ‘Orange the World’ we show that we do not accept violence against women and that we continue to work on a society where respect and safety are self-evident.

What is Orange the World?
Orange the World is the worldwide campaign of UN Women against violence towards women and girls. The campaign takes place every year from 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10 December, the International Human Rights Day. The days in between are the 16 Days of Activism. In more than 100 countries during this period, buildings or other objects are lit orange. Various activities are also organized to engage in dialogue. Additionally, money is raised to prevent and stop violence against women and girls. More information about the campaign can be found on the website of Orange the World.
