Debate at the request of members of the Provincial States

On 12 February 2026, TenneT warned that the high-voltage grid in Gelderland, Utrecht and Flevoland had reached its limits. Subsequently, 30 members of the Provincial States requested an extra meeting. Deputy Ans Mol already stated that everything must be done to prevent Gelderland from coming to a standstill. Now the representatives could also express their views.

More insight, space, research and measuring

During the extra meeting, members of the Provincial States could submit motions. A motion is a call to the executive board to do something or start working on something. Five motions received more votes in favor than against and were therefore adopted:

  • ‘Preventing a connection stop in Gelderland’ (JA21 and other factions) asks the executive board, among other things, to take unusual measures if necessary to prevent a connection stop in Gelderland. The executive board must also ask the cabinet directly to take emergency measures on behalf of the Provincial States.
  • ‘Measuring is knowing’ (Christian Union and D66) calls on the executive board to have TenneT and Liander share all information they can share about the increase in electricity consumption and its causes. The Provincial States also want it to be clear per substation (an electrical installation in the electricity grid) what the consumption is.
  • ‘Getting started with space for entrepreneurs’ (D66 and other factions) asks the executive board to create more space for entrepreneurs to work on innovative projects that can reduce the pressure on the electricity grid.
  • ‘Insight into effects of peak shaving’ (SGP and other factions) calls on the executive board to have the National Expertise Center Grid Congestion organize a demo day on the topic of ‘peak shaving’ before this summer. And if necessary, to financially contribute to that day. Peak shaving is smartly tackling peaks in electricity consumption, for example by using previously stored energy.
  • ‘Research into the origin of the crisis on the power grid’ (SP and other factions) asks the executive board to urge the government and the House of Representatives in The Hague to conduct an independent investigation into the causes of the crisis on the electricity grid.

This happened further on the day of the Provincial States

  • Group Roerdink. Earlier, Marcel Roerdink announced his split from BBB. He retains his seat and continues as Group Roerdink.
  • More motions. This message contains all adopted motions. But more were submitted. You can find these documents at gelderland.nl/Statenlive.

How to participate

Residents of Gelderland like to think along with the province. But how do you make your ideas, opinions or concerns known? There are several ways to participate in the democratic process.
