We have decided that the wolf that bit a runner in Veluwe on April 13, 2025, may be killed. We grant an environmental permit to the wildlife management unit Gelderland.

This intervention is necessary because the animal exhibits abnormal behavior, posing a danger to humans.

Certainly a Wolf

Through DNA testing, expert investigations, and witness statements, as well as based on visual material, it has been established that the attacking animal was indeed a wolf. The behavior of the animal was so purpose-driven and aggressive that it must be considered serious and abnormal. The animal actively sought out people and did not allow itself to be chased away. There have also been more incidents with this animal, which experts have determined to be the same wolf.

Other Measures

The province has considered several other measures to eliminate safety risks. For example, closing the Hoge Veluwe National Park, administering a pain stimulus, and scaring the animal away. It has been established that these measures have no effect (animals can enter and exit the park), are not feasible (administering a pain stimulus), or do not eliminate the chance of recurrence by this specific animal (scaring away).
