We look at how we can improve the water system around Lochemse Berg. We do this together with the municipality of Lochem, the Rijn en IJssel Water Board and the Vitens drinking water company. The goal is a sustainable water system with enough and clean water for people, agriculture and nature.

Parties Sign Intent Agreement

On March 9, 2026, the 4 parties signed the Intent Agreement for the Lochemse Berg and surroundings water system. The Contact Barchem Association is also a partner and signed. This agreement marks the start of 3 years of joint research.

There Is Not Always Enough Water

Between 2018 and 2023, there were prolonged periods of drought. In 2023 and 2024, there were extremely wet months. At the same time, the use of (drinking) water is increasing. As a result, there is not always enough water available. This affects residents, farmers, and nature on and around Lochemse Berg.

Towards a Sustainable Water System

We want a water system that is better able to withstand drought and water nuisance. By working together, we can investigate which measures contribute to enough and clean water for people, agriculture, and nature in the future.

First Attention to Residents Concerns

The first step is to hear what concerns and experiences exist in the area. Residents and farmers are concerned about groundwater levels, water nuisance, and drought. We also want to learn from previous projects, such as in Hagenbeek. The Contact Barchem Association plays an important role by gathering signals from the area.

Plan for the Next 3 Years

During the exploration, we will not carry out large-scale or structural measures.

We focus on:

  • collaborating and building trust;
  • learning from experiences in the area;
  • investigating which solutions fit the water challenges.
