Clean air is vital. It is essential for our health and living environment. On September 7, 2025, Clean Air Day, we pause to reflect on the importance of healthy air. We work for this every day. And you can help too.

We are always working to improve air quality. To this end, we take various measures:

  • Collaborating through the Clean Air Agreement (SLA)

We signed the Clean Air Agreement, just like 22 municipalities in Gelderland. The goal is to achieve at least 50% health gain by 2030 compared to 2016. This means less air pollution from traffic, industry, agriculture, and shipping.

We help municipalities to participate in the SLA. Especially smaller municipalities receive support so they can also contribute to cleaner air.

  • Measuring with mobile air quality monitoring stations

We want to know more about air quality, even in places where there are no fixed monitoring stations yet. Therefore, we will deploy 2 mobile monitoring stations (devices that are placed in different locations) for 5 years. They measure substances such as fine particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), and soot. Currently, the monitoring stations are located in Renkum and Lunteren. The measurement results provide more insight into local air quality.

  • Building clean and emission-free

Mobile equipment such as construction machines are a significant source of air pollution. Therefore, we signed the covenant (an agreement) for clean and emission-free building, aiming to accelerate construction without the emission of harmful substances. Emission-free construction (building without harmful substances) not only ensures cleaner air but also helps prevent construction halts due to nitrogen. It also contributes to a future-proof Gelderland economy.

How clean is the air in your area?

Do you want to know how clean the air is near you? You can register a location for a mobile monitoring station. We pay close attention to each application. More information can be found at Project Mobile Air Quality Monitoring Stations.

Only together can we clean the air faster

Air pollution does not adhere to municipal or provincial boundaries. Therefore, collaboration is of great importance. Only together can we clean the air faster. That is why we are working (through the Healthy and Safe Living Environment Program) together with the national government, other provinces, and more than 100 municipalities in the Netherlands through the Clean Air Agreement (SLA) to improve air quality in the Netherlands.

What can you do yourself?

  • Use the bike more often or walk: less car traffic means less emissions.
  • Use public transport: a good choice for the environment and your health.
  • Burn consciously: only use your fireplace or wood stove when really necessary and certainly not on days when the RIVM advises against burning due to weather conditions (such as fog): Burning Guide | Atlas Living Environment
  • Maintain your devices: a well-maintained moped, lawnmower, or generator emits fewer harmful substances.
