Keeping the Growing Region Accessible
The VeluweWaalpad will soon be a safe, comfortable, and fast way to cycle between Arnhem, Elst, and the western side of Nijmegen. This region is rapidly growing in the coming years due to the construction of new homes. It is important that we keep the area accessible and livable, so people will want to live there. Cycling is a healthy and sustainable way to travel. This cycling route makes this particularly attractive.
Collaborating for High-Quality Cycling Infrastructure
By collaborating and investing in high-quality cycling infrastructure, we make our province more accessible and attractive for everyone. This cycling route runs through an area where many homes will be added in the coming years. These homes must be well accessible by road, public transport, and soon also by bike!

Clean and Healthy Route
In 2022, officials expressed the ambition for the construction of the VeluweWaalpad as a clean and healthy route. With the signing of the cooperation agreement, the involved parties show that they are improving cycling infrastructure and sustainable mobility in the region. The proposed route alternates through residential areas, work locations, and open landscapes, connecting local and regional destinations. It will become much easier to take a bike ride within the region, for example, from Elst to Schuytgraaf or Arnhem-Zuid. With a continuous and recognizable route we reach more people and make daily cycling to work, school, or shops more pleasant for many residents. The VeluweWaalpad not only provides better accessibility but also a healthier and more environmentally friendly living environment.
Governments Work Together for Success
The signing of the cooperation agreement is the first step towards the construction of the VeluweWaalpad. In the coming period, the involved municipalities will develop the final plans for the various parts of the route. They will involve residents and other stakeholders. We support the construction of the VeluweWaalpad with at least € 20 million through a subsidy scheme for large-scale cycling projects within the main cycling network. With this scheme, municipalities can apply for co-financing for the implementation of their part of the route. A contribution from the national government is also requested for this project for the so-called Housing-Mobility funds (wo-mo). This is money specifically for projects where housing construction and accessibility come together.
