‘Tomorrow living in the buildings of today’. With this campaign, alongside new construction, we fully focus on smart (re)use of existing buildings. Deputy Vreugdenhil kicked off the campaign in a newly placed corner house in Elst. A concrete example of how this can work in practice.

Broad Focus on Better Utilization

We have been working hard for years to better utilize existing buildings. The goal is to add approximately 18,000 extra homes by 2030. Since 2026, we also offer a subsidy scheme for municipalities, housing corporations, and homeowners who want to split, add floors, or extend. On 30 January 2026, we take a step further with the launch of our broad public campaign. The campaign increases knowledge about possibilities and encourages home splitting, sharing, adding floors, moving through, and transformation.

Kickoff in Elst with Practical Example

We kicked off the campaign in Elst, in a newly placed corner house of housing corporation Vivare. This corner house approach is a way to add 3 apartments in existing neighborhoods to (or instead of) an existing corner house. This approach can be applied in many places in Gelderland. It is a good example of how we can better utilize existing neighborhoods and buildings.

Call to Look Beyond New Construction

During the press moment, Deputy Dirk Vreugdenhil addressed those present. He called on municipalities and housing corporations to, alongside new construction, fully focus on better utilizing existing buildings.

Homes of Tomorrow

New construction remains necessary, but in the buildings of today lie the homes of tomorrow; make home sharing, splitting, adding floors, or attaching the norm.

More Information

In the coming months, we will share the call to use existing buildings smartly in the public campaign. Residents and housing professionals from, for example, municipalities and corporations can find more information about possibilities and useful tips via our campaign page Better Utilization of the Existing Stock.
