On December 1, 2025, we started measuring air quality along the N302 in Harderwijk. Environmental Agency Region Arnhem (ODRA) will conduct these measurements for one year. This is done at the request of local residents.

The residents group registered for measurements via the project ‘mobile measuring stations’. Residents mainly want to know what traffic on the N302 does to air quality (only nitrogen dioxide emissions). After consultation, we chose a tailored approach: we measure with tubes instead of a mobile measuring station.

Measuring with Tubes

We measure nitrogen dioxide in the outdoor air. With the so-called NO₂ tubes, which hang for one month each time. Then ODRA replaces them and sends the air to a laboratory for analysis. The measurement points are spread along the Harderwijk section of the N302 (see map).

Advantages

The residents chose measuring with tubes because it shows very well how much nitrogen dioxide there is. With tubes, we could also start earlier than with a mobile measuring station. The 2 mobile measuring stations are located until April in Vuren and Renkum and will then go to 2 other locations in Gelderland. With tubes, we measure longer and at more places along the road.

Results

With this research, we want an up-to-date and reliable picture of air quality along the route. After measuring, we tell residents what the results are. We also publish these on the websites of ODRA and the province.

We find it important to involve the residents of Gelderland in research into local air quality.

Therefore, we offer them the opportunity to gain insight into air quality in their own neighborhood. It is great that we can accommodate the residents of Harderwijk by using a different measuring method.
