At the bus stop near Hoofdstraat 163 in Lettelbert, residents and volunteers measured the speed of passing motorists using a laser gun. Motorists driving faster than the allowed speed were shown a ‘Too fast’ sign. Those who adhered to the speed limit saw a ‘Thank you!’ sign. Speeders were not fined. The speed limit on this section of Hoofdstraat is 30 km/h.

Cycling Street

Last year, the Hoofdstraat between Midwolde and Lettelbert was designated as a cycling street. This included road narrowings, red-colored asphalt, and a lower maximum speed in Lettelbert. Cars are guests here. However, research shows many drivers are unaware of this. Motorists often drive too fast and cyclists feel unsafe.

Campaign

A behavior campaign, initiated by the Province of Groningen and the municipality of Westerkwartier, aims to clarify the new traffic situation on Hoofdstraat. Banners along the road inform drivers in both directions about the changes. Additionally, road markings draw attention to the reduced speed limits. Lightning symbols on the road also alert motorists to approach the newly installed road narrowings cautiously.

Through Cycling Route Leek - Groningen

The Hoofdstraat between Midwolde and Lettelbert is part of the new Through Cycling Route between Leek and Groningen. The redesign is the first of six projects for the new route. Currently, the province is working on the section parallel to the A7, from Lettelbert to Hoogkerk.

More information about the Through Cycling Route Leek-Groningen can be found on the website of the Province of Groningen.
