Only the earthquakes near Huizinge in 2012 (3.6) and Middelstum in 2006 (3.5) were stronger. Around 6:30 AM, an aftershock followed the quake, which had a magnitude of 2.0 on the Richter scale.
Response from the Kings Commissioner
A heavy blow
The strong earthquake last night near Zeerijp abruptly ended the hope that stopping gas extraction would prevent severe earthquakes. We knew the possibility still existed. But that it happened last night is terrible for our residents in the wider area. And for all of us.
It will take weeks before the total damage is clear. The promise was that damage handling and reinforcement implementation would become milder, more humane, and easier. This is the moment to prove that.
The earlier heavy blow near Zeerijp, in January 2018, ultimately led to the decision to stop gas extraction. Last night made clear how necessary that was. But unfortunately, the risk has not disappeared. The effects of gas extraction continue to impact Groningen for a long time.
